Today is one of those days where a triple workout is not as bad as it sounds.  I got up semi-early and did my 3 miler while the day was still “cool”  The deer park forest preserve is always the best place for this as far as i’m concerned. It’s a 3 mile loop, what more can you ask?

I ran in shoes today instead of my vibrams and I think i’m slowly adjusting, although tomorrow i think i’m switching back to Vibrams for my 4 miles.  I learned how to “run from my core” today.  I know it sounds weird but I’m learning new things about my body every day and running from the core is kind of hard.  its slows me down and it hurts a bit on the left side (the side where I tore my oblique) but I think this is a skill i need to learn that will make it better in the long run.

My motoactv gps doesn’t like me much right now.  I wore it during the warrior dash and it got caked in mud and a little wet.  This was fine until Sunday morning when i rinsed it off and completely killed it :(.  Being a technology guy, I know that electronics CAN actually get wet, you just need to totally dry them before they will work again.  I stuck it in the air conditioner vent all day Sunday and it powered up nicely in Monday but it’s still kind of acting funny.  I think it will eventually make a recovery but for now I’m sad.

Asylum relief is perfect after a nice run!  30 minutes of stretching and relaxing the joints.  it’s almost not worth considering a workout….almost.  Creepy Shaun-T elmo comes out during this routine as he expresses and interest in coming to my house and pushing down on my back to..”make my body feel good.”  He says this phrase several times in the workout and it never gets less creepy…even in elmo voice.

He wants to make your body feel good.

Tonight is Turbo class.  Last week was an excellent class and i expect it to get even better today.  The routine for Round 50 is working now and my only problem is by the finale, i’m kind of tired for all the other workouts i’ve done during the day.  I don’t have extreme stamina yet…but i’m working on it.  That’s what this is really about, the journey to Shaun T’s body.  (that sounds kind of creepy as well).

Anyway, I’m enjoying a Chocolate, Banana, Coco-Nut milk Shakeology!  Don’t believe me?  Here have a look!

Yes, that is a raptor and yes, it wants my shakeology

all in the mixer

Yes that is a lion in the distance and it also wants my shakeology.

my house is a zoo sometimes…no lion, this is my Chocolate, CoCo-nut milk, banana shakeololgy!

Mmmm, You know you wanna try it!

Have a great day!  Beach Body summit is in 2 days!

Monday is strength day again.  I like strength day, I’ve always been good at lifting weights and getting strong, this workout keeps me going.  I started Asylum on June 1st know that I would be missing several days of workouts due to other activities.  Saturday’s workout was suppose to be Vertical Plyo, I did the Warrior Dash instead

This years warrior dash was different as they added more challenges  to the course, including a kickass water slide right when you needed it the most!  Kat ran it with me this year and did a great job for the heat being 90 and her generally not doing well in the heat.

The dust for the field played a number on my lungs in the beginning and it was a pretty miserable run the first mile.  And then the water slide hit and it cleared my nose (I know that sounds weird but mud up your nose has a way of clearing out the allergies when you sneeze) and it got better.

With the warrior dash over, I need to get ready for the Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon in July on my way to my first full Marathon on Oct 6th.  I’m heading to Vegas in 3 days for the Beachbody coaches summit and i’ll get to workout with Shaun T, Tony Horton and Chalene LIVE!!!

This is going to be a blast and summer is just starting!!  I’ve worked hard to get my body back to a place where I can do things like this again.  If you’re on the same journey and having struggles, check out my beachbody site and let me help you.

www.beachbodycoach.com/brucea.

I’ve been through and continue to journey back to perfect healthy, we can do it together.

Keep pushing play!  Tomorrow is Relief day and Turbo-kick and a 3 mile run :)  Enjoy life!

Insanity: The Asylum - Day 13…this is starting to feel like a journal i keep and have been lost at sea for weeks on end :P

So yesterday was one hell of a calorie burning day.  I did my 3 mile run, Asylum Back to core, worked (I’m a computer engineer so I got to sit a bunch) showed up early and did 20 minutes of Zumba as a warm up and then taught Turbo-Kick round 50.  After careful calculations (HRM told me)  I burned a total of 2216 calories yesterday!

This morning I wanted to sleep in (I’m a computer engineer that gets the luxury of working from home…kind of like lisbeth only i’m not psycho…most of the time). So  I decided to start my workout at noon.  I just finished Strength for the day and guess what?  I’m still freaking tired.  I upped my weights by 5lbs for most of the routine and have a good back and chest burn going right now.  I’m getting so much stronger in my core it’s fun to feel it happening.  When I twist, i feel the muscles engage.  Doing these workouts is the closest thing to redesigning myself a new body I think I can get…without bionics.

But seriously, I’m in my 30s and I’m designing the body that is going to carry me for the rest of my life, I don’t want extra weight, I don’t want weak bones and joints and I don’t want heart problems.  I want to be healthy and a live.  I want to be the old guy no one quite knows how old he is but he looks a lot younger than you and is in better shape (basically Tony Horton)

I’m suppose to do a 3 mile run this evening.  I’m not sure how that’s going to go as I am tired and sore, I can tell you I will attempt it and that’s 1/2 the battle.  Note to self, when you burn off a solid pound of calories in a day, you need to be eating more.

Have a good one and keep pushing play.  Warrior Dash is Saturday and i’m planning a body painting superhero the likes the world has never seen before!

#marathontraining #asylum

Week 2 of Chicago marathon training kicks off with a slow but necessary 3 mile run.  Quite the contrast from Sunday’s 6 miles, it was only 60 degrees this morning.  Perfect for a run.  I mapped a new route that takes me to a massive hill loop, which i figure can’t hurt me.  I also ran in shoes instead of Vibrams today.  Its crazy annoying my left foot loves the vibrams, my right foot loves the shoes.  I think I may try one and one for tomorrow’s run (ok not really).

Breathing is not my issue with running this year, my legs and back are sore.  Which is a good thing!  To me, this means my body needs to catch up with my lungs for a change and i’m up for that challenge.  17 more weeks to go, i’m pretty sure if i stay the course I’ll do fine come Oct.

Asylum: Back to core.  I don’t think I’ve ever been more relieved to see a workout as I was today.  I was expecting a strength workout, which I didn’t feel like doing and was greeted with back to core on the schedule.  It’s not that it’s easier but it’s more isometric.  Bad side:  I already have a sore lower back from the run and this worked it even more.  Up side:  Back isn’t sore anymore si I probably worked out the kinks!

Two workouts down one more to go!  I’m teaching Turbo-Kick tonight at 7 so I should be recovered enough to do this. I’ll be drinking lots of water and eating energy foods until then.

Have an amazing day!  Warrior Dash in 4 days!

#asylum

The soreness in my legs is beginning to fade!  Thank goodness because Today’s 4:30 Turbo-kick class would look kind of funny if I had to do low impact kicks.  Today was Asylum Strength day and I am really digging this program my 3rd time doing it.

I went back through my blogs last night and its funny seeing how something change and some remain the same.  I am a huge P90X fan, I got certified (reminds me, i need to put together a group X program to teach), I did P90X2, Tony Horton is amazing.  Overall P90X is the best fitness program ever developed.  Insanity: Asylum is a close second.

Whereas P90X is more about muscle building and strength, Asylum is about cardio, control and muscle building.  If you are trying to burn calories, do Insanity.  If you want to get fit, do P90X, if you want to be competitive, do Asylum.

I can already feel myself getting stronger in just two strength routines…granted, after not lifting any weights for a few months, this had to happen based on muscle memory alone.

So today I still have to find time to run 3 miles which I will probably do tonight after teaching turbo.

Have an amazing day!

#Asylum

Back to core is one of those workouts that, on the surface, doesn’t seem to difficult, but you’re going to feel it later.  I think whatever is wrong with my shoulder/collar bone involves a slightly strained muscle.  Working it this morning was good as i could feel it stretching out and loosening up a bit but now it’s sore again.  I think i’m going to take some advil and ignore the pain and maybe get a massage.

I always end up with a slight headache when I work core and I think it’s because i’m tensing to much or something.  I know it’s only 3 days in but Asylum is a lot more “enjoyable” this time around than it was the first two.  I guess that’s called progress!

Last week of Turbofire for this session!  Week 12 is an odd week as it has two rest days, one next Sunday and the other is TODAY!  That’s right, first day of my vacation and its a schedule day off from working off as we.l Woot!

Being a day off, i don’t have much to say beyond No turbofire meaning I will have to do some running so I’m ready for the Disney 1/2 marathon.  The good news is is been less than a month since my last race so I should still have retained most of the stamina and impact readiness.  The bad news is that I think I’ve bruised the ball of my right foot!  I run on the balls of my feet, I do turbo and karate on the balls of my feet.  This lets you move faster and be more mobile.

IT FREAKING HURTS!!!

So i’ll do 3 miles today in my Vibrams and see how it goes.  If it’s just an annoying pain, i’ll not take nay running time off.  I probably just need to toughen my feet.  If it’s serious pain,…I’ll have to work on something different.  I may even switch to….gulp shoes since it’s winter time coming up and I could probably use a little padding right now.

I’ll be starting Insanity Asylum next week and i’ll probably bet getting a plyo mat this weekend

My wife hurt her foot doing Insanity and I know it’s hard on the body (I didn’t get hurt doing either Insanity or Asylum but in the spirit of looking out and making sure I stay that way i’m getting a plyo mat).

I guess this will be my last week to dance with the lovely ladies of Turbo

but this mean that in a week, when i’m back with Shaun T for the Asylum (round 2), I get my RACHEL BACK!!!!!!

Ahh, the simple things in life.

Anyway, keep pushing play and i’ll either update my run tonight or see you tomorrow

Today is my birthday and i’m living up to the promise I made myself last time this year, be more active, get back into shape and Do Something Amazing.  I kind of refuse to think all the best things I’ve done are behind me.  Someone asked me yesterday how it feels to be getting old and I told him I feel great!.  People get old because they start to look at the past instead of continuing to look towards the future and what can be done.  People give up and quit, i’m not that person, I’ve never been that person so another year on my age is just that, another year for me to be better than I was before.

Good news bad news.  Apparently I didn’t get the advanced Turbofire workout when it was ordered so Next week is my last week with turbofire :(  I guess the advanced adds another two months to the program, which is great but honestly, i think I’d rather do a month of Insanity: Asylum before I start P90X2 in January.  My wife now Loves turbo and will keep doing it so follow her adventures HERE but I will be moving on.  It’s funny, originally she didn’t want to do turbo because…(Insert female garbage reason here) and did Insanity instead.  Now she’s loving turbo to the point she’s going to order the advanced classes and keep going another two months.

When I workout, whatever workout i’m doing is THE BEST workout I’ve ever done.  P90X was awesome until I did Insanity, which was great until I did Asylum which was great until i did….yeah.  See, I never got that feeling with Turbofire.  I like it a lot but it couldn’t quite breach the “BEST WORKOUT EVER” wall.

This doesn’t mean i’m done with cardio kick boxing as I got an email from the instructor training telling me I passed and will be getting my certificate and rating in a few weeks.  I’m officially a turbo-kick instructor!!  Now to find a job teaching it :).

ON the running front, I start up again tonight.  I have to run 3 miles and I’ve decided to work on speed, any run I need to do that’s less than 5 miles I’ll do at the gym on the dreadmill to work on speed and my longer runs I”ll brave the elements and run outside.  My goal for the Disney 1/2 Marathon is 2:20, let’s see if I can make this happen.

I’m getting into shape, all my clothes are fitting to the point I had to buy new clothes and this year of fit is working.  I just have to be dedicated and continue to

Just push play!

I’d love you to join me!  I’m going to do the 30 days Asylum program starting the week after Thanksgiving.  You have plenty of time to order yours and jump in it with me.  Get a copy here and join me.  or get your free account to track your workouts and possibly win 500 dollars in random daily drawings.  We still have 30 days to go, don’t quit on yourself now when you can still lose that 10-20lbs by the end of the year!

Day 29!  Tomorrow is my fit test and hopefully my numbers will be better than when I started this bitch!  If not then I just went through 30 days of pain for the experience.   Asylum is a 30 day performance enhancement program so I will be doing it again in the future.  I see the value in the drills and the workouts and it’s 30 days so I can easily fit it in between 90 or 60 day programs, unless I decide to hybrid it with those programs….mmmm

Anyway, my performance tonight was meh.  I”m not feeling the greatest and i’m tired and feeling bloated.  BUT, the activities that i’m doing well, i’m doing really well.  my right elbow is giving me some pain and my right foot hurts a bit but i’m holding together.

Speed and agility will remain my enemy until I can ultimately conquer it.  Tomorrow, I do the fit test and Asylum goes on the shelf for a bit.  I will do a second round of this monster in a few months  My next workout is going to be turbo fire.  I just got it in the mail today!!

So after tomorrow’s fit test i’m taking the rest of the week off from working out (other than my normal running) and I’ll be starting Turbo-Fire next week.  I realize that Turbo has traditionally been a “girls” workout but i’m going to do it because I love martial arts and I want to see what all the buzz is about.  Besides, anything that keeps me moving and grooving for 60 minutes daily is going to continue to help me drop weight and get into stellar shape for P90X2 in 3 months.

You want to do the turbo fire workout with me?  Order your copy from my beachbody store and drop me an email.  i”m starting a facebook support group for all the people i’ve been coaching to keep us accountable for our workout and to encourage each other.  If you want to join, send me an email

Keep pushing play

Day 26!  I’ve got 4 more days of this craziness, wow a month goes by fast!  Today is vertical plyo, it’s still just as hard as day one, i’m sweating just as much if not more but it feels good.  Shaun T says something in this workout that I finally caught and understand.  There is a way to understand something on a physical level and then understand it mentally.

Wnen you jump you need to keep your knees soft and your core tight, this takes all the pressure off your legs and makes your core stablize you.  I noticed when i jump and I focus on doing this, it goes much smoother.  I also figured out why my sweat had suddenly become so salty again…the anti-biotic!  It’s a sodium based anti-biotic so when i start sweating it’s like pure salt coming out; really burns the eyes.

With 4 days left I’ve already picked out my next workout, I was originally going to do Insanity for a 2nd round but I’ve decided to switch things up a bit and i’m going to do a 90 day TURBO FIRE!  I know that typically turbo fire is the chick kickboxing/dancing/cardio routine but you know what, I”m ok with that.  If i’m going to be a turbo kick instructor, I need to do the turbo workout right?  And I’m all about compairing workouts and deciding what works for me and what doesnt.  I’m starting this on Sept 5th so I should get a few days break in between workouts which i can definately use.

If you want to join me in turbo fire, order your copy now!
